FreightCoreTMS vs Tailwind
Tailwind is one of the most mature TMS platforms on the market — fleet management, dispatch, accounting, and broker tools in one suite. It also bills per user. For a small carrier with one owner, two dispatchers, a billing person, and five drivers who need portal access, that pricing model gets expensive in a hurry. Here's the honest line on where each tool fits.
The honest setup
Tailwind has been around since 2011. It's a serious tool with serious depth — fleet maintenance, IFTA reporting, broker functions, mature accounting, and a long integration list. If you're a 25-truck fleet with dedicated dispatch, billing, and maintenance staff who all need full TMS access, Tailwind is built for that operation.
The trade is the pricing model. Tailwind's published pricing is per user per month, which works fine when you're a 2-person operation but inverts as you grow:
- 1 owner + 1 dispatcher + 1 billing person + 5 drivers needing portal access = 8 users billed
- At Tailwind's per-user rate, that's 8× the per-seat price
- Add a second dispatcher or a maintenance manager and you're at 9–10 users while your truck count stayed the same
FreightCoreTMS prices per truck with unlimited users. Same 5-truck operation pays the Small Fleet rate ($219/mo Founder, $299 MSRP) no matter how many logins you create. Add drivers to the portal at no cost — the entire point of the driver portal is that drivers see their own loads, and gating that behind a per-seat fee defeats the purpose.

Where Tailwind wins
- You're 25+ trucks with a dedicated back office and complex fleet maintenance workflows. Tailwind's fleet maintenance has deeper parts inventory, shop integration, and advanced scheduling features. FreightCoreTMS ships basic PM (templates, alerts, cost reporting) but doesn't handle parts master or work-order workflows yet. If you need those, Tailwind is the deeper answer. Native A/P remains a Tailwind differentiator.
- You need a single suite for both broker and carrier ops at scale. Tailwind has run both sides of the freight transaction for over a decade. Their broker workflow is mature; ours is more recent.
- Your CFO requires 10+ years of vendor track record. Tailwind has it. FreightCoreTMS is launching in 2026. If the procurement check requires "must be in business 10+ years," Tailwind clears the bar; we don't yet.
- You bill back drivers internally as cost centers. If your accounting treats every driver login as a billable seat anyway, the per-user model isn't friction for your finance team — it's just how you already think about it.
Where FreightCoreTMS wins
- You have more users than trucks. The classic 5-truck-carrier shape — 1 owner + 1 dispatcher + 1 billing + 5 drivers = 8 logins — costs roughly 8× the per-seat rate on Tailwind. On FreightCoreTMS it's a flat $219/mo (Small Fleet, 2–7 trucks, unlimited users) regardless. The bigger your team gets, the better that math gets.
- Drivers should have portal access without you flinching at the bill. Drivers seeing their own loads, uploading PODs, and getting SMS dispatch is the entire value of a driver portal. If giving every driver access costs you per seat, you'll under-deploy it. With FreightCoreTMS it's free, so you actually use it.
- You also run heavy haul (or plan to). Nothing in Tailwind's suite handles permits, pilot car coordination, escort rules, or route surveys. OverSizeTMS does — same login, same dashboard. If even one truck in your fleet ever runs OSOW, this is the differentiator.
- You want Founder pricing locked forever. Sign up before Aug 10, 2027, and your rate is locked at the Founder level for as long as your account stays active. No annual increases, no migration to standard pricing when QuickBooks / ELD integrations ship.
- You want a 1-truck-friendly entry point. FreightCoreTMS Solo is $74/mo (Founder rate) for a 1-truck operation with unlimited users. Tailwind doesn't target the owner-operator segment.
Quick decision matrix
- 25+ trucks with dedicated back office, full A/P + IFTA + PM: Pick Tailwind.
- 1–10 trucks with a small team and heavy driver-portal usage: Pick FreightCoreTMS.
- Owner-operator at 1 truck, $74/mo Founder rate matters: Pick FreightCoreTMS.
- You run any heavy haul / oversize / overweight freight: Pick FreightCoreTMS + OverSizeTMS.
- You need 10+ years of vendor track record to sign: Pick Tailwind.
- You want Founder rate locked forever, OK with a 2026 launch: Pick FreightCoreTMS.
The honest, hardest case for FreightCoreTMS: a 25-truck carrier with three full-time dispatchers, two billing staff, and an active maintenance manager running parts inventory + work orders + advanced scheduling. Tailwind's per-seat math is no worse than ours at that scale because the per-truck rate scales up too. We now ship PM scheduling (templates, alerts, cost report), but Tailwind goes deeper on parts master, shop integration, and work-order workflows — areas we're deferring post-launch. IFTA is now on both platforms (we shipped it June 2026). At 25+ trucks with full back-office staff and parts-intensive fleet maintenance workflows, Tailwind is still the more complete answer right now.
1–20 trucks, growing team? Run the math.
FreightCoreTMS has fixed Founder rates of $74 / $219 / $449 per month (Solo / Small Fleet / Growth) for unlimited users on every tier. Compare that to per-seat math for the same team. The crossover happens fast.
