FreightCoreTMS vs AscendTMS
AscendTMS is the biggest "freemium" TMS in the US — they offer a forever-free tier for owner-operators. FreightCoreTMS does not. So why pay anything? Because the pricing models diverge fast as you grow, and the platforms are aimed at different operators. Here's the honest comparison.
The headline difference: per-user vs per-truck pricing
This is the part that matters most. AscendTMS charges per user; FreightCoreTMS charges per truck.
- If you're 1 person + 1 truck: AscendTMS Free is genuinely free. FreightCoreTMS Solo is $74/mo.
- If you're 1 person + 5 trucks running multiple drivers: AscendTMS still might fit in their free or low-tier — depends on how they count drivers. FreightCoreTMS Small Fleet is $219/mo, includes unlimited users.
- If you're 5 people running a 5-truck operation (owner + dispatcher + bookkeeper + 2 drivers needing portal access): AscendTMS' paid tiers start adding per-user costs that climb quickly. FreightCoreTMS stays $219/mo flat.
- If you're a 15-truck carrier with 12 employees: FreightCoreTMS Growth is $449/mo flat, regardless of headcount. AscendTMS' paid tiers can run several hundred dollars per month per user at this scale.
Per-truck pricing matches what's actually driving the bill: dispatch labor, fuel, maintenance, insurance — all scale with trucks, not with how many dispatchers you hire. Per-user pricing punishes you for adding the dispatcher you needed.

Where AscendTMS wins
Be honest. There are real reasons to pick AscendTMS:
- If you genuinely need free. Owner-operators with 1 truck and no plans to grow get a real, functional TMS for $0/mo. FreightCoreTMS can't compete on that price point.
- If you need EDI 204/210/214. Brokering for a Walmart, Target, or other big-box shipper that mandates EDI? FreightCoreTMS doesn't have it. Move on.
- If you need a track record. AscendTMS has been around since the early 2010s. If your CFO needs the vendor to have ten years of uptime history before signing, AscendTMS clears that bar and FreightCoreTMS doesn't yet.
- If your team has used AscendTMS before. Switching cost matters. If your dispatcher already knows AscendTMS' workflow, the labor of retraining them on FreightCoreTMS may not be worth the savings.
Where FreightCoreTMS wins
- You're a growing carrier (3+ trucks). The per-truck-not-per-user pricing means you can hire the dispatcher, billing person, and additional drivers without your TMS bill rising. AscendTMS' paid tiers charge per user; the math gets ugly fast.
- You also run heavy haul. Same login, the OverSizeTMS sister product handles permits, escort rule engine, route surveys, pilot car coordination, and cost-by-state reporting. No mainstream TMS does this — most ask you to email a spreadsheet of pilot car contacts. See OverSizeTMS.
- You want real-time analytics and lane profitability. FreightCoreTMS shipped RPM, cost-per-mile, margin %, customer concentration, and churn-risk analysis. These were gaps that TMS competitors won on; we closed them.
- You want weather-aware dispatch. NWS alert polygons on the fleet map, forecast cards on every load, auto-risk classifier with oversize wind thresholds. Most competitors don't even ship this.
- You want direct support from someone who's dispatched loads. Every FreightCoreTMS customer talks to the founder for support. No ticket queue, no tier-1 script. The trade for staying small.
- You want modern UI. AscendTMS' interface is functional but reflects its 2010s architecture. FreightCoreTMS was built post-2024 on the current generation of web frameworks.
- You want Founder pricing locked. Sign up by Aug 10, 2027, and your monthly rate is locked forever — no annual increases, no surprise repricing when integrations like QuickBooks ship.
Quick decision matrix
- 1 truck, 1 dispatcher (you), need free: Pick AscendTMS.
- 1 truck, want modern UX + founder support: Pick FreightCoreTMS ($74/mo Solo, Founder rate).
- 2–7 trucks, multiple dispatchers, no EDI requirement: Pick FreightCoreTMS ($219/mo Small Fleet).
- 2–7 trucks, brokering for Walmart/Target (EDI required): Pick AscendTMS.
- 8–20 trucks, growing team, want to budget the TMS as a flat line: Pick FreightCoreTMS ($449/mo Growth).
- Any size, also running heavy haul / OSOW: Pick FreightCoreTMS + OverSizeTMS.
- 20+ trucks, established processes, complex workflows: Get demos from both. The right answer is operation-specific.
The honest hidden costs
Both platforms have line items that don't appear in the headline price. Here's what you should ask about on a demo:
AscendTMS hidden costs
- Free tier has a load count cap and a feature cap — you'll need to upgrade once you hit either.
- Paid tiers' per-user pricing means each new hire is a recurring cost line, not a one-time hiring decision.
- EDI is on a higher tier — if you need it, you're not on the entry-level paid plan.
- Custom integrations or higher API limits are quoted separately.
FreightCoreTMS hidden costs
- DigitalOcean Spaces storage for documents — included in the plan up to a reasonable monthly limit. Excess storage is billed at cost (a fraction of a cent per GB-month).
- SMS notifications (driver dispatch, customer pickup alerts) are pass-through Twilio cost — bring your own Twilio account or pay our markup.
- Each tenant supplies their own DAT, ELD, factoring keys — we bear zero cost for those; you do.
- The platform-paid integrations (Google Maps for routing, FMCSA SAFER lookup) are included in the plan.
The fairest comparison: total monthly cost of ownership at your actual headcount and truck count, 18 months from now. Run that math against both platforms before signing.
